Planting Roots to Safeguard the Future of Coffee and Our Planet

HOW A STRATEGIC PROGRAM LIKE AGROFORESTRY HAS SOPHISTICATED AND LONG-LASTING BENEFITS FOR ALL.

5 million. It’s a number we find difficult to fully grasp, yet has a resounding importance to us here at Nespresso. It isn’t the number of capsules we hope to sell in a certain amount of time, nor is it linked to the number of followers we hope to attract on social media. To us, that number is far more sacred, far more significant.

It’s a number that is rooted in the very principles of our company–both figuratively, and literally. Because we have learned that literal roots will help create a solid foundation for the future: the future of coffee, but far more critically, the future of our planet. This is why by the year 2020, Nespresso aims to plant 5 million trees in an effort to become carbon neutral; a simple investment with sophisticated benefits.

PUR Project
Nespresso has partnered with PUR PROJECT in an effort to become carbon neutral by the year 2020. The solution? Trees.

With the rise of global temperatures, experts recognise that our ecosystem is fragile. Erosion, aridification, pollution, and a lack of biodiversity are all sure-tell signs on our farms that something has to be done. And we’ve found, as usual, that mother nature knows best.

We’ve found that, as usual, mother nature knows best.

One of the solutions we’re engaging with is called agroforestry, and it’s a natural way of balancing human activities with nature. The Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program has partnered with PUR PROJECT and other partners in our agroforestry efforts with the aim to identify coffee farms in specific regions throughout the world that could benefit from regeneration and diversification through the planting of trees.

We’ve implemented agroforestry programs on farms in Guatemala, Colombia, and Ethiopia to name a few. And each program, each initiative, is catered to the specific farm and their specific needs. Whether it’s planting trees on hills to absorb excessive moisture and prevent landslides in Guatemala, or planting trees as a canopy of shade to protect the coffee crop from excessive heat in Ethiopia, we’ve found that trees are a versatile and invaluable gift–a gift that truly keeps on giving.

Guatemala landlslide prevention
In Guatemala, trees are planted along water sources and streams to help prevent landslides. They also act as additional revenue sources for farmers, who can sell timber, fuelwood, fruits, and medicine.
